Extrema Ratio is easily the best military manufacturer of military knives, known as the “Ferrari of fighting knives”. They are the official knife manufacturer to several Italian special forces units, including the 17° Stormo Incursori, the Italian Air force (Aeronautica Militare) special-forces unit and the C.O.F.S. (Comando Operativo Forze Speciali). Extrema Ratio also manufactures knives for N.E.D.U. (US Navy Experimental Dive Unit), G.I.G.N. (special unit of the French national Gendarmerie) and Austrian Special Forces to name a few. The folks at Extrema Ratio produce combat and heavy-duty knives for military use all over Europe as well as for non-EU countries. These are some of the finest combat knives produced and the Col. Moschin is no exception.
COL MOSCHIN

"Col Moschin” pronounced ‘kol-mosh-kin’

There are a few things in life that scream to be owned, and undoubtedly the Col Moschin is one of them.

Extrema Ratio's design team have been spitting out some incredibly beautiful combat knife designs, but the Col Moschin particularly appeals because of its long, slender, classic shape and the double handle guards. The knife itself, considered by ER to be the finest combat knife on the market, was inspired by the daggers favoured by the Arditi during WWI, which had an asymmetric blade and straight but slightly orientated handle.

Commissioned and officially adopted in 2002 by the Ninth Rgt. Incursori, the “Col. Moschin” is named after the Austrian mountain position captured by the 9th Reparto d'Assalto during World War I. The unit now known as the 9th Incursori "Col Moschin” are the crème de la crème of Italian Special Forces, and the successor to the Arditi, taking their name from the IX Reparto d’Assalto. It’s no exaggeration to say the Arditi skills were unsurpassed in WWI — the knife and grenade were their primary weapons. The 9th Incursori "Col Moschin” is known, without a doubt, as one of the best special forces unit in NATO, and are blessed with their own Extrema Ratio knife design. A standing tradition today is the issuing of an ER Col Moschin knife to every Arditi Incursori by the Italian Military with extensive training in how to fight with it.

With a beautiful blend of elegantly shaped Forprene and steel this knife gloats of dominance and pride. The style of this knife sits right between a dagger, a bayonet and a survival knife. Inspired by daggers with an asymmetric blade and straight but slightly orientated handle used by the Arditi, it has been re-elaborated in a modern form, endowed with a double edged blade, (single for the civilian version), integral guards and a removable E.R.M.H. handle in Forprene. Both grindings are hollow grind razor sharp. The centre of gravity is towards the end of the handle, the point especially sharp; it is light, manageable and intuitive.

The finish is a dull, black "Testudo" finish - resistant to corrosion and oxidation. The forprene handles are the most comfortable with a secure grip, even when wet, neatly fastened by one single screw for easy cleaning. This is undoubtedly an intuitive stabbing knife that you could fight with in the dark or low lighting, the quality is amazing. This knife was put through extensive field tests.

With its long reach at 160 mm, it gives enough length for stabbing and a partly serrated blade for maximum flexibility in the field. With this knife you could easily disembowel the enemy. It can do anything you would want a field knife to do, but let’s face it, this is a combat knife. That’s how Extrema Ratio classifies it — they designed it to kill and they’re not shy about saying so.

The molle-backed sheath is amazing - everything about it is well made and sets a very high bar for others to follow. The sheath retention 'lip' is fitted perfectly to hold the knife securely, even when upside down.

This knife is perfect. The sheath is perfect. Materials are perfect. Coating is perfect. You definitely get what you pay for here. There is not much that can fail on this knife. The opportunity cost for the dent in your wallet is a knife that won’t fail you in combat should the need arise — to a soldier, his knife is his last resort and he wants to be sure that he has the best tools to defend himself with. For clandestine special operations missions, a soldier is more likely to use a dagger in combat then he is a handgun. As a home defense alternative to a handgun, the Col Moschin can do the trick. The Col Moschin is a joy to use. Very satisfying! Everything about this knife is designed for fighting. The speed and intuitive feel of the knife make it an awesome fighting knife. They’re next to indestructible and perfectly designed for their function. This knife comes in different blade variations; among them is a non-serrated and double edged version.

Aubrey, you're more than likely looking at a R4500 knife here with black or sand color options.
